Who Are We?

The St Andrew Amateur Orchestral Society was founded in 1878 and has given concerts every year since then.

Previous Patrons have included Hans Gal, and some recent conductors have included Noel De Jongh, John Willmett, and Alison Rushworth. Some soloists we have played with include Florian Meierrott (Pictured below with our conductor, John Glenesk Mortimer), Roddy Long, Garry Walker, Andrew Shetcliffe, Steven Osborne, Malcolm Watson, Sandy McGrattan, Edna Arthur, Elizabeth Clements, Pamela Turley, Malcolm Martineau, Inga Mantle and others.

We rehearse between September and December, and January and May, putting on two concerts a year. Our rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings at Gillespies School in Edinburgh. For our latest dates and programme, click on 'Programme and Rehearsals' above.

Our conductor is John Glenesk Mortimer. John has conducted and played in Scotland and Switzerland as well as having been a composer and arranger for many years.
